ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF FACE TONER PREPARATIONS OF KETAPANG LEAF EXTRACT (Terminalia catappa L.) AGAINST Cutibacterium acnes AND Staphylococcus aureus
Ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa L.) contain secondary metabolite compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and tannins that have antibacterial activity. This study aims to produce ketapang leaf extract face toner that has anti-acne activity. Ketapang leaves were extracted by simplified maceration method using 70% ethanol solvent and concentrated by rotary evaporator. The thick extract of ketapang leaves was then tested for antibacterial activity by liquid dilution and disc diffusion methods and then made into a face toner preparation. The resulting face toner preparation was evaluated for its physicochemical quality, as well as its antibacterial activity against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results showed that ketapang leaf extract has antibacterial activity against C. acnes with a DIA value of 25.23 ± 0.43 mm, MIC 3.13% and MBC 6.25% and S. aureus with a DIA value of 20.09 ± 0.74 mm, MIC 3.13% and MBC 12.5%. The results of the physical quality evaluation test of the face toner are in the form of a solution, yellow to orange yellow in colour, smells typical of extracts and homogeneous and obtained a pH value of 7.23-5.97. After a stability test with the cycling test method, it was found that the face toner preparation of ketapang leaf extract was physicochemically stable. The results showed that the face toner preparation of leaf extract showed antibacterial activity against C. acnes and S. aureus. The best inhibition zone was formed in formula 3 with 9.39% extract concentration with the diameter of inhibition zone against C. acnes and S. aureus were 10.75±0.53 mm and 7.91±0.43 mm, respectively. It can be concluded that face toner preparations containing ketapang leaf extract have physicochemical quality according to requirements and have activity against the tested bacteria.
