(E) Papaya leaves (Carica papaya L.) contain phenolic compounds which have
antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the antioxidant
activity and to determine the in vitro penetration power of serum gel preparations
from the dried extract of papaya leaves. Papaya leaves were macerated with 70%
ethanol solvent, the extract was dried using a spray dryer, formulated as a serum
gel preparation with a factorial design of 22 with two factors, xanthan gum (1%-
1,5%) and propylene glycol (10%-15%). Serum gel was evaluated including:
organoleptic, homogeneity, viscosity, dispersibility, pH, and antioxidant activity
test using the DPPH method and in vitro penetration test through millipore
membrane using a Franz diffusion cell, then determined the level of phenol
penetrated by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Serum gel was analyzed and the
optimum formula was determined using minitab 20 software. A homogeneous
greenish yellow serum gel was produced; viscosity 1610-15250 cP; spreadability
2089,53-2906,84 mm2
; pH 6,13-6,20; IC50 72,28-73,78 µg/mL; and penetration
speed 0,5877-0,6571 µg/cm2
/minute. The result of factor effect and interaction
analysis showed that xanthan gum had a significant effect (P
